Three years after Splendor Duel reworked Marc André and Bruno Cathala’s gem collecting classic into one of the most popular two player games of recent years, Space Cowboys has given it a first expansion. The Counterfeiters was revealed in early June and reached retail on July 3, 2026, in a small box that adds directly to the base game.

What’s in the Box

The expansion adds three new elements, each aimed at loosening the base game’s tight economy. Glassware tokens act as counterfeit gems, standing in for the real thing when you need them. The Counterfeiter cards let you bend rules that Splendor Duel otherwise enforces strictly, opening up plays the base game doesn’t allow. And a set of new Royal cards adds fresh scoring options, giving players more than one way to work toward a win.

The theme is added flexibility. Splendor Duel’s appeal has always been its tense, tactical resource math, where every token matters and there’s little slack in the system. The Counterfeiters deliberately introduces more slack, which should reward players who like to improvise over those who prefer to perfectly optimize.

Who It’s For

It’s worth being clear about what this expansion is and isn’t. Splendor Duel didn’t ship with problems that needed fixing. it’s a well regarded fully realized design that plays perfectly well as sold. The Counterfeiters isn’t repairing anything. It offers variety to players who’ve logged enough games that they’re ready for new wrinkles.

If Splendor Duel has cooled in your rotation and you want a reason to bring it back, this is a low-stakes way to do it. If you’ve never bounced off the base game’s economy and love it exactly as is, the expansion is definitely optional. It changes the texture of play rather than fixing a flaw. And if you don’t own Splendor Duel yet, this isn’t your entry point. The Counterfeiters requires the base game and isn’t playable on its own.
