Stack of board games

What’s this thing all about?

Welcome everyone to a new site influenced by my burning desire to be playing board games rather than, well most other things I end up doing. But wait, why would I waste time putting a site together, thinking of topics to post, and creating amazing content when I…could be board gaming? Great question!

The perhaps irrational answer is that I have felt compelled lately to help grow the hobby that I love so much, beyond how I have engaged with it so far. That engagement has been quite significant, honestly. My friend group has been getting together weekly for well over a decade for a dedicated board game night, pulling in between four and eleven players each week. We play both in person, and digitally. I own dozens of board games, many resting happily on a 5X5 Kallax shelving unit. Others are scattered about on tables, bookshelves, and wherever else they get set, scowling dismissively at my platitudes that I will totally organize them all – again – soon.

What can you expect to see here?

Another good question. I expect the content here to perhaps meander a bit over time, but I do have a plan for content out of the gates. I have recently begun playing games heavily online on Board Game Arena in the intervening time between sessions with my gaming group (because I would rather be board gaming, of course), and have really been enjoying getting to try a bunch of games that I might not otherwise have played.

I don’t consider myself to be a remarkable reviewer, but I plan to try putting together some posts of games I’m playing there, with the grossly ambitious goal of eventually covering every game on the platform. I enjoy all varieties of board games, and am looking forward to dramatically expanding my horizons. I plan to write a post about a game after at least five or so plays, so I have a decent feel for the game. Obviously there are many games on BGA that I have played many times in person or otherwise. I’ll try to sprinkle those in, as I’ll probably have more nuanced takes on them.

Other than that, anything may go here. Perhaps commentary on my weekly game sessions, excitement about upcoming games or crowdfunding efforts, or even unboxing first reactions. Likely some meta commentary on this effort to create board game content instead of just relishing playing games.

What can you expect not to see here?

As mentioned above, I expect the content here to be exclusively text based. I don’t plan to create any video form content, because I don’t enjoy making it, and I’m doing you all a favor not torturing you with it. If that format is what you’re after, sorry. You’ll just have to go check out some of the awesome content creators out there who specialize in that kind of thing, and who can speak effectively.

Stick around for the journey

As with any new effort, there’s obvious trepidation and uncertainty around whether this thing is going to stick. But it’s a lot more likely to if there’s a steady and engaged audience. I look forward to hearing reader feedback and engaging with other people out there who love board games as much as I do.
